I don't intend to take on the role of MLive gadfly, but today's Facebook feed brought me a story from the Bay City Times about weather-related crashes still accoring. Accoring? At least have someone glance at the headlines.

The point is, reporters covering stories and submitting on the fly don't have time or focus to thoroughly inspect their stories for errors. This is no time for newspapers to give up quality control.

Related: a copy editor friend shared this yesterday: http://www.chicagoreader.com/Bleader/archives/2012/02/08/do-newspapers-think-we-cant-see-whos-missing

How should one feel having written a comment or a blog, then after careful inspection posting same, only to discover sometime later the existence of an unintended but obvious fault? Correction I would, but does that mitigate the emotion of being human? "Sigh, indeed!"

I'm often amused by the differences between English and American. The word holiday to English ears refers to what Americans will know as vacation. Christmas and the like will be referred to as bank or public holidays in English. We just talk about Christmas and not season or holidays in the UK. Season is spring, summer, autumn or winter. Even though the UK is a fairly cosmopolitan, Christmas is still Christmas, and is more secular than religious. Our differences provide hours of entertainment and pleasure.

By the way in English the word world refers to all the countries of the globe and not just the USA. Another interesting difference.

I like the blog. Pedantry is one of my favourite pastimes.
